Fixed price or offers: how should you sell your domain?

October 28, 2026, 2 min read

When you list a domain for sale, you have to decide how buyers will pay for it: at a price you set, by making offers, or either. Each approach attracts different buyers and suits different sellers.

Selling at a fixed price

With a fixed price, sometimes called "buy it now," the buyer sees exactly what the domain costs and can buy it immediately.

Advantages:

  • Fast decisions. Buyers don't have to start a conversation, wait for a reply or worry about offending anyone.
  • Impulse purchases. A buyer who's ready can complete the purchase in minutes.
  • Less work for you. No back-and-forth negotiation.

Disadvantages:

  • Price it too high and the domain sits unsold.
  • Price it too low and you may sell for less than a buyer would happily have paid.

A fixed price works best when you've researched comparable sales and want a simple, predictable sale.

Accepting offers

With offers, buyers propose a price and you respond.

Advantages:

  • You learn what buyers will pay. Offers give you real information about the domain's value.
  • Flexible buyers aren't lost. Someone who'd walk away from your listed price might still make a reasonable offer.
  • Room for unique situations. Some buyers can pay more than you'd have dared to ask.

Disadvantages:

  • Time. You'll spend time on replies and counter-offers.
  • Lowball offers. You'll receive some offers you'd never accept.
  • Some buyers don't like negotiating and skip listings without a clear price.

Why many sellers do both

Combining a listed price with offers gives you the best of each:

  • Decisive buyers can buy instantly at your price.
  • Hesitant buyers can make an offer instead of leaving.

To keep it manageable, set a minimum offer. Offers below it are blocked before they reach you, so you only spend time on serious ones.

Which suits your domain?

Choose fixed price only if:

  • you've done your research and are confident in the value,
  • you want minimum effort, or
  • the domain is modestly priced, where negotiation isn't worth the time.

Choose price plus offers if:

  • you're not sure what buyers will pay,
  • the domain is worth a meaningful amount and you'd like to hear interest, or
  • you're happy to negotiate.

Choose offers only sparingly. Listings without a price tend to get less attention, because many buyers assume the price is out of reach.

Tips for handling offers well

  • Reply promptly. Interest cools quickly.
  • Counter rather than ignore. Even a low offer is a sign of interest; a counter-offer keeps the conversation going.
  • Be consistent. Don't raise your price because someone showed interest. It erodes trust.
  • Know your floor before offers arrive, so you can respond calmly.
